Kindergarten Oracy Routine
We know that oral language and literacy achievement are highly correlated. Skill with spoken syntax and grammar is linked to stronger reading comprehension and writing output. Likewise, deep and broad vocabulary knowledge supports reading comprehension.
Immersing students in language-rich environments is a necessary but not sufficient for development strong oral language. Students need constant opportunities to practice new vocabulary and language structures as well.
In this video, kindergarten teacher Anjanette McNeely showcases a simple daily routine that helps students develop expressive language by using complete sentences and staying on topic. Students have been learning about the weather, and now they have the opportunity to share about their favorite weather and why it is their favorite.
Here are a few things that I love about this routine:
Everyone student speaks. Even if a student decides not to share, they must state that they want to pass.
Most of the time is reserved for student-talk.
When Anjanette does interject, she offers quick and precise feedback and then asks the student to immediately apply it.
Anjanette quickly and clearly explains the purpose of this routine at the beginning AND at the end of the lesson.
The routine related directly to the content the students have been learning about.
This routine is great rehearsal for writing.

Very nice, Anjanette!!
